Kiel Headlines 2007
To some readers, Kiel's major economic development headlines near the end of December may seem like the biggest news of the year.
To others, who followed developments throughout the year, the signed agreements between the City of Kiel and its two largest employers were only the culmination of a year-long effort to promote industrial expansion in Kiel.
Those two expansions top the list of stories for 2007, bringing good news to Kiel on the economic and employment front.
Stoelting, LLC and Polar Ware (its Sheboygan-based parent company) were lured to expand and consolidate operations in Kiel, with the city's assistance. The move not only preserved jobs already located in Kiel, but convinced the company to move its Polar Ware operations from Sheboygan to Kiel, bringing those jobs here as well.
In the process, Kiel City officials worked with Economic Development Corporation of Manitowoc County and the State of Wisconsin to provide fiscal support for the move. Kiel's portion of that support includes a $350,000 economic development grant generated from Tax Incremental District funds.
In addition to bringing more jobs to the community, the Stoelting/Polar Ware consolidation includes a $3.5 million expansion project at its STH 67 site.
Sargento also moving ahead
Likewise, the City of Kiel worked with Sargento Foods to help facilitate their expansion project, with an estimated value of $8 million at its Kiel site.
The expansion will improve loading and unloading areas, but will also facilitate the addition of more manufacturing lines.
More jobs are expected to be created as a result.
Again, the city worked in consortium with the EDC to create an incentive and assistance package. City of Kiel officials signed an agreement to provide Sargento with a grant valued at 10% of the expansion. Like the grant to Stoelting/PolarWare, the monies are generated from the tax increments in the TIF district. Neither project has an impact on the city's current operating budget.
In other development notes, the plans in Kiel moved forward on three major housing projects, including Kieland Meadows, Duke Estates and the Oak Park Assisted Living complex.
Major retail news made a positive impact on Kiel, as the Doute family announced plans to move the Sears franchise store from Chilton to Kiel. They held their grand opening this past spring.
School plans move forward
Right behind the economic development news, was the news that the Kiel Area Schools are beginning to look at the next phase of needed facilities and technology improvements.
School officials began talking this year about the need to study the district's needs.
Jim Pankow Construction of Plymouth was hired out of a list of several design/build firms. In December, Pankow Construction met with the Board of Education to do an initial walk-through of Kiel's educational facilities. The school district is also looking at forming a citizens committee to review needs and recommendations in preparation for a potential 2008 referendum to fund the improvements.
Community rocked by fatalities
A year of positive economic news was also matched by a year of tragic news for the Kiel community.
Throughout the year, several tragic vehicular accidents claimed the lives of well-known young people in the Kiel area.
Families and the community alike were rocked by the deaths of brothers-in-law David Karstaedt and Keith Jochimsen in a two-truck accident near St. Nazianz. The year began on a tragic note with a pair of 21-year-olds losing their lives in two separate accidents. Christopher Kloppenburg was killed near Plymouth on New Year's Day. Tori Heimann was killed near St. Anna in a February accident where her car was struck by an alleged drunk driver.
Two other young men from the Valders area were also killed in accidents that occurred in the News coverage area.
Tragedy struck the Scott and Sheila Ramminger family early in February when a devastating fire totally destroyed their Town of Schleswig home. The home of the Kevin Nett family on Whipporwhil Lane in the Town of Eaton became victimized by fire late in the year.
Among the other top news stories of the year were the following-
n Governor Doyle reception hosted in Kiel during Capital Week in Manitowoc County;
n Manitowoc County agrees to sell health care center;
n Ss. Peter and Paul/Holy Rosary merger results in the creation of Divine Savior School plan; and
n talk about eliminating a messy goose problem permeates fabric of community discussions.
